It's bad enough for some propeller planes to be described as being powered by elastic band. Now the cynics could begin having a dig at business airplane flying on everything from cooking oil to liquefied algae.

With the civil aviation market under increasing pressure from increasing oil rates and environmental legislation, the race is on to discover practical alternatives to conventional kerosene and these so far seem to come down to numerous types of biofuel.

It was reported that Brazilian airline companies Azul, Gol, TAM and Trip would act as tactical consultants for the task.

The current airline company to start try out new fuels is the Alaska Air Group which has performed US flights utilizing a mix of 80 % petroleum based fuel and 20% biofuel made from cooking oil. This mixture, it is claimed, can cut hazardous emissions by 10%.

One truly motivating advancement has been the move away from biofuels which complete head on with food consumers therefore preventing a rate spiral. Not so long earlier, a rise in use of biofuels in cars caused a spike in maize costs as US farmers diverted too much corn to fuel processing.
